ERROR CORRECTION!
In the newsletter we sent out a few days ago we
mis-printed
the website information for Landmark Academy in Port
Huron, Michigan. The correct URL is:
www.landmarkacademy.net
We apologize for the confusion!
Greetings from Mariaemma & Victoria...
As we sent off the August newsletter, we were just
about to
catch a plane to visit Landmark Academy in Port Huron,
Michigan. What a wonderful trip that was!
We spent the next 10 days with the dedicated staff of
Landmark Academy. 26 teachers received Level 1
LearningSuccess Coach certification and 10 staff
members
began the Level 3 certification process. In addition
we did
workshops for the entire staff, for the teaching
assistants,
and for the parents.
We are very excited to add Landmark Academy to our
growing list of schools that are working on
LearningSuccess
School designation. It was such a pleasure to visit
your
school and to meet so many people who value our
LearningSuccess model that brings learning success
to every
child. We thank all of you for welcoming us so
cordially and
for
generously taking care of our needs during our visit.
We congratulate each of you for being willing to go
beyond "No
child left behind" to "Every child shines!"
Landmark Academy is a K-8 Charter School. For more

LearningSuccess Law #2
What are LearningSuccess Laws? They are principles
that we have come to believe are essential for
learning success, life success, and all other
aspects of success. They are short and simple:
Learning doesnt have to hurt!
Success leads to more success!
Coaching brings out the Star!
This month we will look at the second Law:
Success leads to more success!
You might be thinking, Well, that's obvious...Yet,
more often
than not, this Law is not applied when parents and
teachers
work with kids. Here is the more common scenario:
If the student is "having trouble" with a subject or
skill (such
as reading), the student is forced to do more and
more of
that subject or skill. The thinking is that the more
he does the
better he will get. The opposite is true. The
student is put
into a position of continuous discouragement and
lack of
success. Lack of success leads to more
discouragement and
even more lack of success.
Similarly, telling a student that "unless you get
this, you
won't get into college or get a good job" discourages a
student rather than motivating her to "do better."
Recently, we have had quite a few people ask us
about the
issue of plagiarism: what should a teacher or parent
do when
a student plagiarizes. We are bringing this up here
because it
is a perfect example of Success Leads to More
Success! Here
is our perspective:
We never say "you plagiarized" - most kids don't
know they
are doing that. They think they are gathering
information and
giving you a report. Even if they do know what it
means and
"deliberately" did it, there is still nothing to
gain by accusing
and punishing.
What we say to them is something like this...
"Wow, you are so creative, you find fantastic
websites and
you assemble reports that are very attractive" - in
other
words you say what is good about it...
Then you say something like, "I notice that this
information
comes from (so and so or that place, etc.). When we do
reports like this they are called assembled reports
- we are
using other people's words and information. For
example,
there are books like Chicken Soup for the Soul (you
can show
the student an example) that collect other people's
stories
and then they give them credit. So when you do
assembled
reports, this is what is needed..." (and you explain
about
referencing - putting name of person or publisher,
name of
book, magazine, website - whatever is
appropriate)
You continue to explain: "Another kind of report is
one that is
in your own words. I would like you to try one of
those when
you are ready. For your next report let's practice
with another
assembled report and put in all of the references..."
Eventually you encourage them to try an original
report...
In this scenario, the student is acknowledged for doing
something that many published authors do...the student
learns the correct way of giving credit...the student
experiences success...and that will lead to more
success.

Awesome weekend - you blended the best of the best
in educational techniques and communication skills.
It's a clear path toward successful, compassionate
and child-centered education all rolled into one.
Rachelle Wafer, teacher, Laurel Springs
School
I feel so enriched by my three days with you both!
Sally Van Der Kar, mom and teacher
Victoria and Mariaemma are amazing! Every school,
parent and person who works with kids should use
their book and assessments.
Suzanne Lopez, therapist
I received some great teaching techniques but, more
importantly, I realized that learning and evaluation
don't have to pit one student against another.
Everyone can succeed without diminishing the other
people with whom they learn.
Heather Havens, Assessment Coordinator
I have already learned so many valuable things that
I plan to use immediately. I can't wait for the next
session!! I have a very strong feeling that this is
going to open up a whole new career path for me, one
that I never would have considered before. Thank you
for your ideas, your presentations, your encouraging
words and your warmth.
