  • We don't know about your January, but ours started off with a bang! Victoria and Mariaemma and their husbands spent a wonderful New Year's Eve together, enjoying a most delicious meal cooked by “Chef” Victoria and being entertained by her husband Stan and his guitar. We also reviewed accomplishments of 2005 and brainstormed goals for 2006. We discussed how grateful we are for all of you who have read our books, attended our workshops, or become certified LearningSuccess Coaches. Many of you have written or called to say what a difference we have made in your life or the life of a child.

The second week of January we were interviewed for an article on learning styles for the Lincoln Star Journal. The article was in the January 13 issue and journalist Erin Andersen did a terrific job quoting us! You can read the article at
    http://learningsuccessinstitute.com/journalstar.html

The third week of January we were visited for the second time by a dedicated group of educators from Landmark Academy Charter School in Port Huron, Michigan. They spent three days with us in an intensive LearningSuccess Leadership Training. We ended our time together with plans for us to go to Landmark this summer to conduct onsite training and also to have some fun together!

This week we are holding a Level 1 LearningSuccess Coach certification training. It will be attended by teachers from Pathways Charter School (Santa Rosa, CA), Laurel Springs School (Ojai, CA), and Dehesa Charter School (San Diego, CA), as well as parents who want to learn how to be the best LearningSuccess Coaches for their children.

In between all of this Mariaemma had great fun hosting a baby shower for a dear friend's daughter - complete with catering by former homeschooled student, Ashley Mulligan. Ashley started her company Thyme to Cater when she was in high school. She has continued to follow her calling and is now an amazing chef!

And Victoria is on deadline working on another book - “Respectful Parents, Respectful Kids”...watch for it in the near future...

This coming Sunday Mariaemma will be at Barnes & Noble in San Luis Obispo, California, for a presentation and book signing. If you are in the area, please join us...details are below under Upcoming Events.

We are continually inspired by the students, parents, and teachers who come to work with us. We hope that we can be an inspiration in your lives as we coach you to coach others (or yourself!) to success!

We wish you a new year filled with hopes, dreams, and great beginnings.

    The Verbal Learner

Do you have a member of the family or a student who is a Verbal Learner?

Here are some clues: chatty, “talks all the time,” disturbs others that want quiet, makes verbal noises or talks under breath...One or all of these phrases might describe the Verbal Learner in your life.

Here is a common scenario for a student who is a Verbal Learner: The student reads instructions on a worksheet...runs up to parent or teacher...says “I don't get this”...parent / teacher says, “What do you mean, read what it says”...student begins reading out loud...suddenly student says, “Oh, I get it” and goes back to his seat. This behavior might be repeated several times a day or even an hour! The parent / teacher thinks, He just wants attention or She wants an excuse to get up or He's not confident about doing the work by himself.

Actually, the student simply needs to say the instructions out loud - to verbalize them. A Verbal Learner needs to hear him/herself talk!

These students need to talk things out, discuss, repeat instructions to themselves, read out loud, use verbal strategies for studying and memorizing. Acknowledge this need and encourage verbalizing wherever and whenever possible. When you are in a place that requires quiet, such as a library, you can coach this student to talk quietly, whisper, or even mouth the words.

For more information about the Verbal Modality and other learning styles check out our book, Discover Your Child's Learning Style, at www.learningsuccessinstitute.com or go to www.aselfportraitonline.com

The Verbal Learner on the Job

Students who are Verbal Learners grow up to be adults who are Verbal Learners! If someone teaches them about learning styles and the Verbal Modality, they will learn how to use this strength in their everyday lives and on the job.

Verbal Learners need to talk it out, discuss, repeat things to themselves...just like the Verbal students, they need to hear themselves talk!

People who are Verbal Learners and are aware of it, can use this information to help them find a workplace that suits this need. A company that encourages co-workers to talk out ideas, sets up brainstorming sessions, and communicates verbally more than through email, for example, might be the perfect fit for this person.

Employers who are aware of this characteristic will have a better understanding of the Verbal co-worker and what it takes for this person to do his/her best on the job.

It's okay to be who you are and it's okay to have a job/career that matches who you are. It's more than okay-it's essential! Doing what you love fills up your spirit and that affects your relationships, your finances, your whole life in wonderful ways!
